Promoting, Educating & Preserving the Art of Quilting

Because we love our art, we want to share it, encourage folks to take part in it and preserve it for future generations.
Quilting and sewing in general are important radical self reliance skills. If you know the basics, you can clothe and protect yourself and your family from the elements.
Our camp is focused on the idea that everyone should know how to sew and that quilting is an ideal way to learn the basics. Piecing a quilt top uses the most basic of sewing skills. Once those are mastered then other projects such as clothing becomes easier to learn.
How are we going about it?
Our Camp consists of two areas: Education tent with off street bike parking and camp member living area.
The 20’x40’ Education tent is where folks may view quilts, learn about quilting, make a simple project to take home, and even participate in our art installation.
In the Education tent, BRDQ camp members will volunteer a couple of hours a day to meet visitors, answer questions and help them create a simple quilt block.
We plan to have several semi commercial sewing machines on site, so folks can get hands on experience under the supervision of an experienced quilter.
We will have all the materials necessary for a visitor to create a block to take home or choose a block design and colors to make a block for the “Desert Stream” Art installation.
We have selected 10 simple block designs to represent the 10 principles of Burning Man. Guests may choose a block that speaks to them, then choose fabrics to make it their own. Click on the “Volunteer to make blocks” button to see the block designs.
Once a guest completes their block, they may choose to take it home or it can be added to 15 others to create a streamer and placed on the playa as part of the installation.
We have created detailed instructions for all 10 blocks and those are available in our Facebook group. These files are free for anyone who wants them.
We hope that our fellow quilters will be encouraged to participate by making blocks for “Desert Stream” even if they are unable to attend Burning Man. We need a total of 1600 quilt blocks…
We are seeking 8 - 10 camp members experienced with quilting or sewing in general. If you are interested in becoming a Camp member please use the contact page or message us on Facebook. We are working on the logistics and need folks to sign up as soon as they can commit.
